Many of these other professional photographers are my friends and I respect their work and how they produce it. I feel like this gives our photography a very pleasant look with good depth and dimensional lighting that is, in most cases, not obvious to the viewer. In other words, The wedding pictures do not look “flashy”. We bring this small unobtrusive yet highly effective Profoto Light with us at every City Hall wedding we do. In most cases we bounce the flash off of the neutral walls at San Francisco City Hall which helps produce very soft lighting, but also separates the couple from the background and makes them stand out even better. I will go through some examples and a more detailed explanation on the rest of this post.

Why Use Flash For San Francisco City Hall Weddings?

One of the most common questions I receive from other City Hall wedding photographers and couples is why do I use flash? The reason for this question is that camera technology has come so far now that you can take pictures practically in the dark. So why then do I need any kind of flash? The answer is simple… yes it’s now possible to photograph wedding pictures in very dark conditions using natural light only, but this isn’t always the best look for the subject. People are accustomed to thinking that natural light is always the best because it sounds so nice. We always love everything that is natural! However, There are many places in San Francisco City Hall where the natural light is actually very unflattering. One prime example of this is the bottom of the Grand Staircase. At certain times of the day the majority of the light is coming directly overhead from the huge picture windows at the top of the building. Most professional photographers understand that overhead light is generally not flattering and can cause raccoon eyes and ruddy skin tones. When I use my off-camera Professional light it creates very nice soft flattering light and gets rid of the raccoon eyes.

There are also places in San Francisco City Hall we’re taking wedding pictures is almost impossible without some sort of Artificial lighting. The beautiful ornate windows throughout City Hall can be very difficult to photograph directly into. Especially if there’s sun or bright light coming through. Using a well positioned flash unit coming in from side angle eliminates this problem while still showing the beautiful window in all of its detail. I have seen examples of other wedding photographers trying to pull off this difficult shot and they get either Silhouette images or ghost like pictures With no contrast and lots of gray. I use an advanced technique to keep this from happening by raising my shutter speed to match the ambient light coming in through the window and then using my angled bounced flash to light the subject beautifully. My SF City Hall brides and grooms love this look and I frequently get complimented on how much they love the final image.

Special Techniques for SF City Hall Wedding Pictures Using Remote Light

There are very few, if any, San Francisco City Hall wedding photographers that can create the types of photos I can produce by placing my remote light behind the subject. One of my favorites is to position the bride facing directly away from me while looking out one of the beautiful windows at SF City Hall. I place my remote flash directly in front of her and aim at her dress and veil. I then will have her spread her veil out with her arms or maybe pull her dress open slightly This allows some of the light to shine through and makes her whole dress glow in an angelic fashion. Please check out the example below to see what I’m talking about. This type of shot is nearly impossible without a remote light except on the rare occasion where the sun is coming in through the window. In general the sun is only low enough to do this during the winter months and it’s difficult to capture accurately. With my flash I can dial in the exact amount of power I need to make the wedding photo perfect.

Another technique I use with my light placed behind the subjects is to have the bride and groom do a dance dip which brings the veil down. This will make the veil glow. For those SF City Hall brides that don’t have a veil I’ll have them hold their dress out to the side and the flash will partially shine through that section of the wedding gown. This also creates a spectacular and unique look. Even if I don’t put the light behind them, I can place it to the side I can direct the light at certain parts of the wedding dress to highlight the beautiful texture and glow. There are a number of other special effect pictures I can pull off with my remote light and I will go through those in more detail on a future update to this blog post.

SF City Hall Remote Flash to Balance Newlyweds with Contrasting Skin Tones

Here is where some of the magic really happens by using a remote light. One of the most challenging types of San Francisco City Hall wedding couples to photograph are interracial. Especially if one of the subjects is has much darker skin tones than the other. I have lost track of how many interracial couples have asked me how I will handle their contrasting skin tones. Using my off camera lighting setup this is not even a challenge. All I have to do is point the light in the direction of the darker skinned bride or groom. I will angle the light appropriately depending on how severe the contrast is between the two newlyweds. This completely solves the problem and makes it look very natural. Here is an excellent YouTube Video on this very subject. The photographer in this video does in the studio exactly what I do at San Francisco City Hall. Please see my example below of a black groom and a white bride so you can see how this technique works for newlyweds during their City Hall photo shoot.. No Photoshop was necessary to create this San Francisco City Hall wedding photo.

Dynamic Posing in Wedding Photography Using Off-Camera Flash

Both my camera and my Rohoto Professional flash unit allows me to capture pictures at 10 frames per second. This flash recharges so quickly that it can actually keep up with my camera and light up each picture in rapid fire succession. You might be wondering why is this helpful? The answer comes down to the use of dynamic posing techniques for my SF City Hall wedding couples. I can have them do dance moves or run through some of the hallways of City Hall and my camera will capture every photo perfectly no matter how dark it is. In addition, I can have the bride spin in a very fast motion and I can capture her at every single angle as she twirls around. This can create some spectacular pictures as the dress shows how beautiful it is when it’s in motion. If you have ever watched A Bride try on a wedding dress You’ll see that this is an important aspect to them. They will often spin back and forth and watch what the dress does In the mirror. So why not capture this Movement in photos? My advanced lighting setup allows me to do this and I can capture some amazing City Hall wedding photos with this technique.

I will update this post very soon with more information about how using Remote lighting can be a huge benefit and make your San Francisco city hall wedding pictures beautiful and stand out.

We are one of very few San Francisco City Hall wedding photographers that utilizes professional off-camera lighting.
